What is a Shrew?

Updated: Jul 3, 2020

Today , I was spending some quality time with my parents watching tv when this little baby animal was so helpless and these two people were trying to bring it to full recovery. It was the cutest little thing it was less than two inches. Finally they said it was Shrew! According to Oxford dictionary “ a small insectivorous mammal resembling a mouse”. Interesting enough shrews will bite (poisonous) a snake and actually kill it. Not only that but shrews also fight one another for survival. Like Charles Darwin has said “survival of the fittest” at it’s fines. Here is a video if you willing to watch this! https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x3gq35t

Shrew are not actually rodents even though they do look like a mice. They are actually closely related to moles and hedgehogs. Shrews are pretty commonly seen worldwide. These mammals are very tiny for the most part. However, Asian house shrew are known as the largest of their species. They are mostly found in South Asia and Eastern Africa. Shrews are very active mammals and have an amazing sense of smell and hearing. However, they have very poor vision and they do not hibernate which is pretty cool because they can live under snow. According, to some studies they actually can lose half their body weight in the winter. Something that is really interesting is a female shrew can give birth after a day. Crazy right? They can have up to 10 of their own kid within a year! All that being said their life span is 1 to 3 years tops. So you know peptides found in food like eggs. Guess what? Again according to research northern short tailed shrew have peptide that can treat ovarian cancer! Hope you learned something today I sure did(:
